Plumed Whistling Ducks - Gathering in the Shallows

I encountered a lakeside pontoon completely surrounded by a vibrant flock of plumed whistling ducks. At the water's edge amidst the larger gathering, my lens focused on a small, intimate trio in the shallows. Concentric ripples radiate outward, surrounding the birds and binding them to the moving surface of the lake. In a fleeting instant the camera catches water dripping cleanly from the bill of one duck; time to slow down and appreciate the peaceful rhythms of Australia's wetlands.

A Limited Edition Print (5) fine art photograph by Elizabeth McNamee.

The Plumed Whistling-Duck is one of two whistling or tree ducks found in Australia They now occur throughout the eastern states, NT and northern WA.. During the day the Plumed Whistling-Duck congregates in large numbers with other waterfowl, on the margins of lagoons, swamps and mangrove creeks, for preening and sleeping. At night they fly out, often quite long distances, to feed on grasslands.
