Bush Curlew – Phantom of the Night

I came across this little curlew, a rare moment, rather than fleeing or freezing in fear, the bird allowed me to stand witness to its quiet, deliberate world. Known for their nocturnal stealth and haunting cries, this Bush Stone-curlew stepped out of the shadows completely unafraid. It circled a clump of grass with a slow, bobbing rhythm giving me the opportunity to capture an enchanting moment in its daily life.

Bush Stone-curlews are mainly nocturnal and specialise in hunting small grassland animals, mainly invertebrates. They can live for 20 years, sometimes more. They are a terrestrial predator adapted to stalking and running. The Bush Stone-curlew call often heard at night is an evocative and unforgettable sound. It is a penetrating, strident, wail, rising with a slight waver, and dropping at the end and often repeated a number of times in quick succession.

The Bush stone-curlew is a protected species under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and their conservation listing in Queensland is “Least Concern”.
