A poignant image to the fate of this unique species on the edge of extinction. This young male sits with the morning sun shimmering along the contours of his body. Head bowed as if contemplating his species uncertain future. 

It is hard to imagine that these majestic human–like creatures are on the brink of extinction. Orangutans in Sumatra are under immense threat.  The Sumatran Orangutan was once distributed over the entire island of Sumatra and further south into Java it is now restricted to the north of the island. Of the nine existing populations only seven have prospects of long term viability. A century ago, more than 230,000 orangutans roamed in the wild.  They are classified by the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered.
