While the Australian Pelican is currently classified as a species of Least Concern, their populations face ongoing pressure from human activity, habitat changes, and localized pollution.  These pressures include loss of wetlands, nesting disturbance, fishing gear entanglement, toxic algae and runoff and climate change and severe drought.  They are legally protected in all Australian stated. The Australian Pelican has the longest bill of any bird in the world.
