AUSTRALIA’S UNIQUE WILDLIFE, PLANTS AND ENVIRONMENT
The isolation of Australia for 55 million years created a sanctuary for the birds, animals and plants which have lived and evolved in geographic isolation. It is the home to some of the most magnificent species of animals and plants found nowhere else on the earth. It is one of the most biologically diverse and rich places on Earth. It is one of 17 countries recognized as mega-diverse. In Australia 600,000 to 700,000 native species exist.
Among Australia’s best-known animals are the kangaroo, koala, echidna, dingo, platypus, wallaby and wombat with 828 Bird species listed and the highest diversity of lizards in the world. Australia has 20,000 species of plants, including living fossils such as the cycad palm and the grass tree, 700 species of acacia and 1,200 species in the Myrtaceae family which includes eucalypts or gum trees and wildflowers which turn the arid and savanna areas into painted canvases of colour after rain.
